⛪ Church Modeling – Not for Beginners

Some projects come as simple tasks, and some arrive as once-in-a-lifetime learning opportunities. Recently, at Asbuild3D, we had the privilege of working on one such project: the Scan to BIM modeling of a historic church.

This project was not just about creating a Revit model. It was about preserving heritage, understanding Gothic architecture, and overcoming complex technical challenges.

📸 The Beginning – A Church Scan

The church was scanned with a FARO laser scanner, which provided us with a dense and high-quality point cloud. At first glance, the data looked clean and promising, but as always, the real challenges appear during modeling.

We decided to dedicate 3 skilled manpower for this project, and it took our team 8 days to complete. Every team member was fully involved in ensuring accuracy, speed, and precision.

🏗️ The Challenges We Faced

1. Gothic Windows

The church had beautiful Gothic-style windows, each one different in detail. These weren’t simple rectangular or circular windows — they had curves, arches, and intricate detailing.
➡️ Our team carefully reconstructed every single window in Revit to match the exact architecture.

2. Arch Ceilings

Inside the church, the ceilings were covered with complex arch structures. Modeling them was time-consuming because every arch had to be perfectly aligned and accurate.
➡️ Extra time went into ceiling modeling, but the final result was worth every effort.

3. Above-Ceiling Structures

What made the project even more challenging was the hidden structure above the ceilings. From beams to supporting elements, there was much more detail than initially expected.
➡️ Capturing all of it in the Revit model ensured a complete and accurate digital representation.

💡 What We Learned

Every project teaches us something new. From this church, we learned that heritage modeling is not for beginners. It demands:
✔️ Patience – rushing means losing details.
✔️ Expertise – Gothic structures are complex and need experienced hands.
✔️ Teamwork – only through collaboration could we achieve this in 8 days.

✅ The Final Model

After days of hard work, the final Revit model reflected the true beauty of the church. Every Gothic window, every arch, every ceiling detail was modeled with accuracy.

For us, it wasn’t just about finishing another project — it was about digitally preserving a piece of history.
